Cover for the Meanwhile Comic Shop Benefit anthology developed by Ryan Higgins and Kevin Sharp, with Kickstarter.

The yellow portraits are covers for pre-code comics made and/ or read by women. These disappeared when the Comics Code came in in the 1950s (brought in with the intention specifically of taking down EC Comics, more on that in a later post), they are now in the public domain. I think it is important to show these works as we are just on the cusp of forgetting that women have always been reading and making a lot of comics.

A story for the new Little Earthquakes anthology from Z2, written, drawn, colored and lettered by me, based on the song “The Pool”.

The pages are twelve inches square at print size and the Little Earthquakes book is published by Simon and Schuster and includes stories by Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood and many others, as well as this. Available in shops and directly from Z2 from November 2022.

Ask me to write and draw you a short story. I enjoyed doing this and would like to do some more.

Published in February 2022 by Image Comics as a guest issue in the creator-owned comic series ‘The Department of Truth’, normally drawn and coloured by Martin Simmonds.

This is a selection of pages (page 1 is the second image) in roughly chronological order, but not as a direct sequence, showing colors and pencils side by side. Jordie and I are keen to work together again, and are (subject to Jordie’s availability) available as a team.

We both enjoyed making this very much, and you can see here what Jordie brought to the lines and layers of patterns that were offered.

A note: I was diagnosed with cancer soon after I started drawing this in December 2021, commenced it whilst starting treatment and finished the lines a couple of days prior to my first surgery in mid January 2022. At the time of writing this in late March, 2022, I’m coming back to productivity. This was a comic made under extraordinary circumstances, and I appreciated the opportunity to push the bounds of what was possible. A real dream team comic.

Cover for the arc of Hit Girl drawn by me: Hit Girl: India. Set in Mumbai and otherwise known as Hit Girl: No Mans Land, our story was written by Peter Milligan, colored by Triona Farrell and edited by Rachael Fulton.

Unusually for an Image Comic, as well as being owned by Mark Millar and John Romita jr, our series was made very largely in the UK and Ireland. Hit Girl: India could not have been made without the huge contribution from a wide group of friends of sometimes but not always Indian (and Nepalese, Scottish, Pakistani, Bengali, Polish, Trinidadian, Lithuanian, Mauritian, Irish (and more)) descent who are depicted throughout the book, sometimes as themselves. We wanted to show Mumbai as it is, not as readers might think it is, helped by people who have lived there. So a city of people going places, chaotic, often crowded, maximal, busy, but also beautiful and full of possibility, so much of everything and everyone, everywhere and all of the time. So many stories. Throw Hit Girl in the mix and there could only be trouble.

Hit Girl is in shops on 16 October 2019, and #2 (this cover) follows on 13 November.

Inspired by my love of mediaeval art and Tin Can Forest.

A digital art commission from Netflix, to help promote the film Bird Box. The question was: “what are you most afraid of”.

It is a surprisingly difficult commission as answering the question means revealing a personal truth and probably a weakness of oneself.. I realise we didn’t need to be truthful, but I thought it would be more communicative if it was. I thought of House of Leaves, and put myself there. Being lost in that house, and never being able to find the way out of the dark. HOL remains a terrifying novel, if anyone wants to do a graphic adaptation (not sure if the original can be improved on- but still)- please ask me.

A commission from the Hayward Gallery, to illustrate the essay in the exhibition catalogue, to the major mid-career retrospective of the South Korean artist Lee Bul.

Due to budget constraints, I proposed a way of illustrating the piece, which made the clients funds go as far as possible, whilst allowing there to be a parallel thread of continuity with the essay. Lee Bul has such a wide breadth of work styles I thought it was important to take my voice from the art, so that the focus remained with her story. I used a range of found materials, from my own arm to a hand drawn map Lee Bul had made when she was younger, to family photographs, to newspaper cuttings, to glass beads, a rubbing of the gallery wall and so on. These became a landscape upon which we could sow the narrative.

Working in close coordination with the curators, and Lee Bul, the brief was developed, discussed and signed off, then we had a series of approvals. The Herron estate was kind enough to allow the original scans of Ron Herron’s Walking City to be used, so I could add Lee Bul dancing across them as part of her art. I added in the portrait to round out the piece, and to close the essay.

It was an honour and a major lifetime experience to be invited to complete this commission, to meet Lee Bul, a truly progressive artist and role model, and to explore the space between commercial and fine art. I’m grateful to the Hayward Gallery for asking me, and I think everyone was pleased how it turned out.

A double cover for Ram V and Sumit Kumar’s exciting Vampires-in-India series for Vault Comics, this time colored by myself.

The European vampires go to India and meet the local monsters. The cover shows the foreign ship sailing up into our protagonist’s hair, as it goes from being the sea to forest- and she has her own stuff going on.

Bleecker make and sell gourmet burgers. This art was originally made for their first sit-down restaurant in Victoria, and includes the company history, likenesses of founding staff, London locations, and the companies distinctive black and white street-style aesthetic.

The second design was adapted from the first to provide a larger installation and a format that could be licensed for a wider variety of uses.

A map for storytelling on the interior pages of The Wicked + the Divine comic (Image Comics). Based roughly on the layout at Excel London, where the story is set, but redesigned for purpose, and fitted for the London Fantheon.

The kind of thing you might find in a real convention brochure, but with more puns. Concept, art, design, color and text by me with client-side advice interjections from Kieron Gillen and Chrissy Williams.

Commissioned by Shelly Bond and Ellie Pyle for DC/ Vertigo’s Mad Max Fury Road Art Book.

We had very little reference as the work was done before the film was shown. However, based on the fact that the reference provided was of multiple *actresses*, I took a guess that the film was about female friendship and ecology- and it turns out that it was. Lines and color by me.

A digital commission from BBC Radio 4, for National Poetry day. Concept, design, lines, colour and graphics, an approvals process, a submission of layered images and final adaptation in for various forms of social media. The BBC went on to use the work in a ‘nose to tail’ way, animating the layers coming teogether, using it for tickets for the live performance, in various aspects for the website design, and finally, as a giant back drop for the live performance. I really enjoyed this. The BBC is a wonderful client.

A commission from the Guardian newspaper, with about twenty four hours between commission and print, including approvals. For the full width of the broadsheet media section cover, to illustrate a keynote essay by Zadie Smith on JG Ballard’s novel, Crash.

Given the public nature of the printed form (it will be seen by families) and the nature of Ballard’s work, I opted for a soft classical form for the nude falling out of the car. Developed in conjunction with the color and layout of the (evolving) front page graphic.

I am open to further editorial illustration commissions and, as a designer, am interested in the challenges, as faced by this commission- pitching and developing designs as part of a telephone conversation, staying in touch, working with adjacent bold graphics and meeting short deadlines.
